WhatsApp click-to-chat links and QR codes: a practical guide for small businesses
Most customers would rather send a WhatsApp message than save your number, open the app and search for you. A click-to-chat link removes those steps: one tap or one scan, and the chat opens with a message already typed. This guide shows how to make the link, where it brings the most messages, and what to check before you print it.
What a click-to-chat link is
WhatsApp's click to chat feature lets anyone start a chat with you without saving your number. The link format is https://wa.me/ followed by your full number with the country code, without "+", spaces, dashes or a leading zero. For an Indian number 98765 43210 that is https://wa.me/919876543210.
You can add a pre-filled message with ?text= and the message encoded for a URL, for example https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20want%20to%20book%20a%20table. The customer still has to tap send, so they stay in control.
How to make one in under a minute
- Open our free WhatsApp link and QR generator.
- Enter your WhatsApp number with the country code.
- Type the message customers should send. Make it specific: "Hi, I want to book a haircut" works better than "Hi".
- Copy the link, or download the QR code as a PNG.
- Test it on your own phone and on a friend's phone before you share it.
Where the link brings the most messages
- Google Business Profile: add it as your website or booking link where allowed, and mention WhatsApp in your description.
- Instagram bio and Facebook page: one link that opens a chat is easier than "DM for price".
- Your website: a WhatsApp button on every page, especially pricing and contact.
- Printed QR codes: counter standees, bills, visiting cards, menus, flyers and delivery bags.
- Different messages for different places: use "Hi, I saw your flyer" on flyers and "Hi, I saw your Instagram" on Instagram, so you know which channel works.
Printing a QR code that scans every time
- Print it at least 2.5 cm wide; bigger for standees read from a distance.
- Keep dark modules on a white background with a clear white border around the code.
- Do not stretch it, put it on a glossy curved surface, or cover it with a logo.
- Add a line of text above it: "Scan to WhatsApp us" so people know what it does.
- Scan the printed proof with two different phones before you print hundreds.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out the country code, or adding a 0 or + in the link.
- Using a personal number that is often switched off or full of family chats.
- Sharing a link and then not replying for hours. A fast first reply matters more than the link itself.
When messages start piling up
A good link brings more chats, and the same questions repeat: prices, timings, location and booking. The free quick replies in the WhatsApp Business app help at first. When you need replies at night or in several languages, a WhatsApp bot on the official API can answer and book for you. That is what a BotSetu WhatsApp bot does, in 15+ languages.

Talk to us on WhatsAppCommon questions
Is a wa.me link free?
Yes. Click to chat is a free WhatsApp feature and works with both the regular WhatsApp app and the WhatsApp Business app.
Can I see how many people clicked my link?
Not from WhatsApp itself. Using a different pre-filled message for each place (flyer, Instagram, website) shows you in the chat where each customer came from.
Does the link work on a computer?
Yes. It opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app if the person uses it, and the phone app on mobile.
